Gurbet Eller

About the project

«Gurbet Eller» collection is inspired by Selin Yücel’s grandfather, Ahmet Durna, who migrated to Germany as a Gastarbeiter in 1971, mirroring her own journey abroad. Combining traditional Turkish felt-making and the Kepenek with a 1970s-meets-modern aesthetic, it merges luxury with handmade craftsmanship.

The Gurbet Eller collection reflects cultural heritage and migration through a contemporary lens. Inspired by Yücel’s grandfather, who left his village with nothing but his jacket, its pockets symbolising a life reduced to what fits within them. It embodies a journey of hope and marks the beginning of Selin’s own story, honouring his courage.

Created with felt artisans from İzmir-Tire, it modernises Turkey’s historic felt. Turkish craftswomen contributed knitted pieces, while felt masters crafted Kepenek and felt fabrics, anchoring the collection in cultural authenticity. Community-building was central, ensuring all contributors became part of the story.

Reimagining her grandfather’s journey from Malatya to 1970s Germany through a third-generation perspective, the collection fuses traditional materials with tailored silhouettes, capturing migration, culture, and resilience.

Rooted in her heritage — from his village to Germany, her upbringing in Istanbul, and her path to London —

honouring a shared history while embracing the future, marking the start of her own journey.
